Episode 805: World In A Garden

San Diego Botanic Garden is regarded as one of the world’s top ten botanic gardens. The sheer variety of plants that call the Garden home are staggering – thanks to the garden’s Mediterranean climate, varied topography, and coastal setting. More than 30 themed gardens represent plant collections from regions around the world. In this first of a two-part series, we discover the Garden’s on-site displays. We visit orchids and lush tropical plants in the stunning conservatory. We are introduced to flora -some surprisingly familiar – from South Africa, Mexico, Australia, and more. Why do those plants grow so well in San Diego County? How are they organized and presented? How can they be used in home gardens? As we explore the Garden, we answer these questions in conversation with the Garden’s horticulture staff and with Ari Novy, San Diego Botanic Garden’s Executive Director.
