Episode 806: Botanic Garden Goes Wild

In the second of our two-part series about San Diego Botanic Garden, we shine a light on the Garden’s scientific underpinnings which include conservation, research, environmental stewardship, and education. We learn how collections and their management are at the core of every botanic garden. We discover the principles of evolution through the similarities of plants that evolve in similar climates, even when those climates are on opposite sides of the planet. Offsite, the Garden’s conservation staff shows us the important work they do to protect and enhance rare and endangered native flora that exists quite literally in our backyards. In the Garden’s nursery, we see how a small handful of seeds can become pots full of plants ready to be used in local restoration efforts. They grow alongside equally rare and endangered plants from Arizona, from Cuba, from Hawaii, from Kenya, and other places, all grown here to safeguard their existence. San Diego Botanic Garden is not alone in these efforts, it is one of nearly 2000 botanic gardens around the world working to document and preserve all the plants on Earth. Why is this important? Tune in to find out.
